Dear Connecticut Hospitality Community,
Earlier this week, the Washington D.C. City Council voted to REINSTATE THE TIP CREDIT PERMANENTLY in our nation’s capital. The successful amendment will provide immediate relief to restaurant owner/operators as it helps stabilize their labor costs and keep them from potentially closing their doors under the original I-82 Timeline.
It is a huge win not only for D.C., but for restaurants across the country. In Connecticut, our members have watched these developments closely and we firmly believe that tip-credit structures—responsibly applied—offer both flexibility to manage payroll and the potential for servers to earn significantly more.
Across states—from Connecticut to DC and beyond—united advocacy efforts by state restaurant associations have played a central role in shaping policy outcomes that balance the needs of workers, diners, and operators. By sharing research, policy recommendations, and firsthand experience, state associations have successfully defended the tip credit in multiple jurisdictions facing ballot measures and legislative proposals to eliminate it.
Congrats to RAMW’s CEO Shawn Townsend and his entire team, as well as everyone at the National Restaurant Association led by VP of State Affairs & Grassroots Advocacy, Mike Whatley. While we celebrate this win, we also know there is more work ahead.
Keeping this in mind, I would like to personally ask everyone to show their support by purchasing tickets to attend the CRA’s 2nd Annual Benefit for the Restaurant Advocacy Fund (RAF), which is set for Tuesday, September 23 at The Barns at Wesleyan Hills in Middletown.

The RAF Fund has not only provided financial support to Connecticut over the years, but it has also provided direct financial support to RAMW in these efforts, as well as Massachusetts, Ohio, Arizona and more who have all faced similar tip credit elimination fights in recent years. Learn more about RAF here.
